EDMONTON – Whether you’re high school- or university-bound this September, back-to-school style is brimming with prints, nods to past decades and — true to scholastic form — an abundance of denim.
Top trends include plaid (think updated grunge), playful prints and athletic elements that would make Sporty Spice proud.
“The ’90s are still a major trend this fall — I’m sure we’ll be seeing it across a number of age groups,” says local stylist Cassy Meier, who also referenced sportswear and eye-catching prints as major trends.
Kali Mattinson, one of three local bloggers behind 204 Park, agrees, referencing 1995 cult-classic film, Clueless, as a key contributor.
“Crop-tops, distressed denim, rose prints and plaid are hot for back-to-school,” she says.
Mattinson’s blogging partner, Diana Tidswell, also sees the lasting power of plaid for both back-to-school and beyond, noting the print’s versatility.
“A casual plaid top paired with denim is a go-to look that’s always stylish, and can be easily dressed up or played down depending on how you want to feel,” she adds.
Yet for those looking for a different trend, sportswear and all-seeing eye prints will play an equal role alongside those slouchy sweaters, loose-fitting jeans and flannels slung around the waist.
Running shoes, track pants, preppy layers and baseball caps are just as on-trend as their ’90s counterparts, with sporty elements popping up in unexpected ways — think running shoes worn with oversized coats, and track pants thrown on with stilettos. There are no rules, in other words, when it comes to getting dressed for class this season.
“Now is the time when almost anything goes, as long as you’re confident and comfortable with what you’re wearing,” 204 Park blogger Sarah Giuffre says. “From boots and dresses, to skirts, jeans and graphic tees — whatever it is, find what you love and rock it.”
